FromSoftware’s upward trajectory with first the Souls series and now Elden Ring has publisher Bandai Namco feeling bullish about its return to Armored Core, a mech series that began in 1997 but had been dormant since 2013’s Armored Core: Verdict Day. It may be on to something, because our own Wes Fenlon described Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon as “Top Gun: Maverick for anime nerds like me who grew up enraptured by Mobile Suit Gundam instead of F-14s” on the way to awarding a shining 87 score. I mean, that sounds pretty great.
Bandai Namco Europe CEO Arnaud Muller has been doing the rounds at Gamescom, and told GamesIndustry.biz he thinks the shift in audience expectations for the publisher and “a new dimension” for the game itself will see Armored Core break throug…

Read moreThe next big update to Baldur’s Gate 3, officially known as Patch 7, is coming in September, and ahead of that Larian has dropped an in-depth update on what the patch will include. The studio is also now taking applications for a closed beta test for the patch, which is set to go live—the beta test, that is, not the patch—on July 22.
Some of what’s coming in the patch is already known: Better endings for evil playthroughs (careful not to step in any) and, more importantly, full-fledged mod support. Today’s update goes deeper on the whole thing, and of course there are spoilers. One coming change that is not a spoiler is the addition of a “dynamic split screen” mode that will give co-op players the ability to merge their screens into one when their characters are close …
Read moreThe next big survival game may well be the procgen fantasy MMO Lost Isle, and looking at this thing just makes me want to plunder a lot of fortresses. I mean, of course you can build your own too, but something about this is just screaming “lots of lovely loot to steal”, and I’m not going to argue with my inner monologue.
The secret sauce here is Lost Isle being both PvE and PvP and set in a world that’s different every time. The generated landscapes come crammed with lost secrets, looming monuments, and plenty of treasure-stuffed caves. The environment is warped by the dark magic at the heart of the game’s mysteries, which also powers an array of weird and wonderful creatures out to keep you away from the loot… well, really they don’t care much about that, and just want to kill…

Massive, expansion-level DLCs feel increasingly rarer in a climate flooded with live service microtransactions and seasonal passes. Personally, I’m just excited to get my grubby little mitts on another slice of FromSoftware’s pedigree.
It’s also potentially a function of how FromSoftware does business, focusing on their popular niche rather than bending the knee to wider trends—which also extends to the recent mass layoffs, which are currently in vogue in the name of “agile and more focused” studios, whatever that means.
In a recent interview with IGN (thanks, GamesRadar), Elden Ring’s director Hidetaka Miyazaki touched on how dire things have been for game developers in 2023—a trend that …
